We found Joe through a mutual friend.

At one point, I was talking to a larger brokerage company. My partner was the one taking out the loan, but as their job is very demanding, I was handling the purchase of our new home. The guys (and yes, they were always men) at “Space” Mortgage were absolutely perplexed by this; they constantly asked for my “husband, ” and never made a note on the account that I existed though we are married. (I never even broached the subject of my partner's gender because I think their heads would have exploded.) Furthermore, I have an uncommon name, but you’d think they’d make an effort at it for a sale. I think I lost it around the time I had a broker with an uncommon name himself refuse to address me after I made an effort to get his name right, even noting it phonetically.

Joe had no problem addressing me by my name. Even trying to get my name right is a strong indicator of a real commitment to inclusivity. And he also didn’t think it was weird that I was handling the purchase of the home; he believes my woman brain can do anything - what a feminist icon!

Additionally, due to my husband’s income as a software engineer, we could afford more “house” on paper. Of the other companies I spoke to, I got a strong sense they wanted us to buy at our ceiling. But we knew we just wanted a bit more house, and buying at our ceiling would mean not having fluid cash for other pursuits, like traveling or our child’s education. At one point, a broker said something about a larger property, “for when you start a family” and I informed him we actually had started and concluded making persons for said family. But Y I K E S why would you say that? ! Joe selflessly cautioned us against buying at our ceiling, and even had ideas about neighborhoods where we would feel at home at that range. We bought at our floor, actually.

What’s most important about Joe’s approach is he’s just very direct about how this process works and the inherent inequities for those of us who are politically progressive and loathe all of this stuff. There should be a person in our community who does this as a service for those of us who don’t want to give the system more validity by engaging with it, and that’s what Joe is here to do.

He also knows a lot about purchasing assistance programs. You might think you don’t count as lower income but you’d be surprised what you could qualify for as it’s all very subjective. Before I met my partner I was a low-rung non-profit peon and it’s wild to think I could have purchased a home making beans if I had just spoken to someone knowledgeable on the topic.

Don’t hesitate to call Joe. You are throwing away money renting when you could own a home and never have to worry about rising rents and displacement in your community. You can do this!

Joe was incredible. My mother-in-law was looking to transfer ownership of her house to my wife and I, so of course we had a million questions. Joe made sure that all three of us were satisfied with the final arrangement, and even got us the loan we needed to do major repairs on our house. A 10/10 person and extremely knowledgeable.

Joe was amazing and so helpful in making sure we could buy my mom’s house, despite some financial challenges. He walked us through the entire process and made what could have been a very stressful experience incredibly seamless. Highly recommend!

I'd consider Joe to be a first time homebuyer expert! He was referred to us by a friend of ours who had also recently closed on their first home, and he exceeded our expectations at every step. He patiently walked us through everything we needed to understand to make our informed decisions, all while working TIRELESSLY to get the best possible grant to have our down payment covered by the city- he literally ran us through several programs to find the best one for our situation.
Joe was a calm hand in the storm, anything that could have went wrong did go wrong on this loan and we still closed ON TIME.
Super responsive (I'm pretty sure he took my call one time while he was at Disney World?)
Definitely a rock star at his job who doesn't mind a real challenge! Thanks for helping us land our dream home!

Joe is good people. I bought in a tough market, and I was encouraged to make certain concessions on my contract. He made time over the weekend to make sure I really understood what i was doing to make the decision for myself before we submitted the offer. He told me if we wanted to do a quick 30 day contract I should send him my documents ahead of time. I did that, and I didn't really even have to worry about it past that. We even closed ahead of schedule!

Joe Meier is incredible. As a first time homebuyer, I had a million questions (and fears!) but Joe answered everything and was very hands on. When we started, I thought I wanted a house in the mountains, and then changed my mind to an enormous Victorian in University City, and finally a row home in Cobbs Creek (what I actually got). Though it all, Joe was solid and understanding, and worked with me to look through grants and other first time buyer programs. Could not be happier.
