Penn Avenue Fish Co, Pittsburgh PA

Everybody from the owner, I believe his name is Henry, to the kid behind the fish counter, to the women at the cash register, are rude and arrogant. The atmosphere is the opposite of welcoming and hospitable. This used to be my go-to spot throughout high school and when I would visit home from college. I had so many unpleasant experiences through this time but the food was good enough to keep me coming back.

After moving back to Pittsburgh recently I wanted to give Penn Ave Fish another try. I really shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up because I had the same experience as when I used to go. The whole staff was rude to me, impatient, and I even saw this behavior directed towards other customers. At least my food would be good I thought. Unfortunately, the fish gumbo was possibly the most bland gumbo I’d ever eaten. My sushi was warm. It was a huge disappointment. I worked closely with restaurants across Texas for years and I never encountered a restaurant like this anywhere from the Lone Star State back to the Keystone State or in between.

Give your money to Luke Wholey’s a block down the street where the whole staff is much friendlier and the food is better. If you can’t go there go to Roland’s.

Stopped here for lunch on the first day of a visit to Pittsburgh. Best tuna sandwich I’ve ever had, so delicious. Great vibe and starting point for exploring of the Strip District.

Overall GREAT! I had the Sneaky Pete Sandwich and my partner had the crab cake sandwich, which was tasty. The bread was soft and the side of spicy tuna roll was super fresh.

The food is very good with the seafood being very fresh. However, for the price, the portions are quite small. The interior of the place is also very cool and love that there is seating on one side. The salmon I ordered was well cooked and the vegetables along with it paired well.

Went for lunch. Sushi was good. Mussels were also tasty. Fish tacos, lobster roll and crab sandwich we're all low on salt and flavor. Portions were generous.

This place is amazing! First all, it’s byob which is always a good thing. Go pick up a good bottle or wine or a six pack before coming in. We came during oyster happy hour ($1 per oyster). They were delicious and the service was fast! We couldn’t help but try a variety of sushi rolls and they did not disappoint. The spicy crab roll and spicy senorita roll were both very unique and something I’ll be dreaming of! I’m not sure I can eat sushi anywhere else in pittsburgh…Penn Avenue Fish Co, you have spoiled me! We will be back many more times!

Least fresh fish in Pittsburgh. Tuna had metallic taste. Rice taste like overnight rice but worse. I can’t believe they used crab stick for $7 crab nigiri. Total disappointment. Service was nice though.

Dirty. Food was good and decent value. Servers a little gruff. Don't expect a 'hello' and 'thank you. ' Did I mention that it was dirty? Before ordering, go i to the bathroom. You'll end up walking out.

The best sushi I've ever had. Our waitress Sue was extremely nice and helped us navigate the menu to find the perfect order. I would highly reccomend this place. Good price. Great quantity. Better quality.

One of Pittsburgh’s best places for fresh sushi. I stop here any chance I can, which isn’t too often but every time it is absolutely worth every penny. The experience is like nothing else you’ll find in the city, offering a wide range of sushi and seafood variety. This spot tends to get pretty busy during the lunch rush, but thankfully their 5 star staff can handle just about any volume to make sure you get served in a timely manner.

Henry is just amazing with his customers. It feels like walking into a friend's store.
Quality is the best in Pitssburgh. I never thought I would be comfortable having my fish from anywhere else.

Food portions were very small and the taste of the fish dinner was poor. I was expecting a large piece of deep fried cod on a large bun instead I received two 3-in chunks of fish on a hamburger bun? And unfortunately the fish was 80% breading. I appear to have paid $25 for a $5 meal

If you are looking for good seafood you should definitely go here. My waitress was very personable and gave great recommendations on what to get. I will definitely be returning in the future!

After a stop at our local winery, it was onto dinner! Looking for sushi! We decided on penn ave.they are always busy.you can eat in, take out, or shop seafood to take home. (if you like hamachi, ask them if they have any.)
so we placed our order & found a table.the waitress came & opened our bottle of wine.yes, they're byob! It wasn't long before our food came.
4 rolls-a ronnie roll, a benny roll, shrimp tempura roll & a lollipop for tom.each 1 was perfect! The fried items were crunchy from the beginning to the last bite.beautifully arranged on a platter.we probably would have had another, but there was dessert waiting at home for us! Thank you for a delicious meal! We'll be back soon!
