Penn-Roosevelt State Park reviews
7Reminants of CCC camp are nearby. Remote area. Has a 4h camp. Cute pond that is dammed
Not a detour. Just to swing by and visit, it is not worth what it does to your car and nerves to get there. Secluded. Very brief. A little littered.
Barely a three rating is in comparison to activities offered at other PA state parks. The park itself is in good shape. 18 rustic campsites with some being walk-ins. One group campsite with a new structure being built. (see photo). The CCC Camp Monument reminds visitors about how the park came about. Other activities are just outside the park in the surrounding Rothrock State Forest. They include horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking.
Great place for family fun however I wish they would fix the dam. I wish the community could push the state to fix it!
Nice little state park. Not too much hiking here, but there's 80,000 acres of Rothrock State Forest nearby. The campground has some nice secluded walk-in tent sites. All sites FCFS. Did realize that the bathroom near the campground is out of order, so you'll have to walk a bit down the road to find a restroom. Would have been nice to know before it was too late.
Hiked in from Tussey Mountain via Shingle Path and Mid-State Trail with Boy Scout Troop 245. Camped overnight and enjoyed exploring the dam and spillway the next day. Unseasonably warm and sunny for November! The new organized group tenting area is excellent!
Depending on what you are looking for, this place may or may not be for you. It is certainly secluded and rustic but the grounds need some love. The lake is pretty well dried up and I’m not a fan of the pit toilets. The bugs were unbearable. Some of the tent sites had nice flat pads. I felt very isolated and alone here just not my cup of tea.
