Steamtown National Historic Site reviews
20A must-see for any rail geek. Great exhibits, knowledgeable and friendly docents, and lots of rolling stock to see (including the mammoth Union Pacific "Big Boy"). Expect to spend at least 2 hours there, and visit the Electric Trolley Museum while you're there (you can use the same parking lot).
Surprising to have such an amazing museum in Scranton. Highly recommend. Huge collection of locomotives and rolling stock. Don’t mess the Overlook walkway
A huge collection of steam locomotives park rangers are well knowledge about those and what is necessary to run those. They charge no fee for entry into the museum.
We visited Steamtown National Historic Site a few weeks ago. The site, also known as Steamtown USA, is very informative about how the steam engines changed America. They have fully restored steam locomotives and offer train rides.
In addition to the many trains on view Steamtown National Historic Site has one of the few remaining Big Boy locomotives. Only 25 Big Boys were built and I believe about 6 or so Big Boys remain.
It is a nice experience if you like to know about the railroads and the trains and the coal mining
Fantastic place to visit. The trains were amazing. Much history and information here. Excellent and I would highly recommend.
Great museum. Plenty do do, young and old. Great learning experience about days of yore, in one of the cities that created that history. Knowledge staff on site at all times. Definitely plan a visit.
Awesome place to visit! Entrance is free so it's easy to just stop by and check out, which is what we did. Really great to learn the history and see some of the trains and steam engines.
What a great experience for avid steam enthusiasts. Got to see an engine turned in the roundabout. Very informative displays and lots of engines to see. One of the Big Boys is on display there-wheels as tall as a man! Will be back.
What a wonderful place. Lots of history. Staff was very friendly. I bought a lot at the gift shop to help them out. My son loves it there. Please support history.
This place is amazing especially if you live freight trains. Can stay all day to watch trains. Staff is excellent friendly helpful too notch. Live the museum too.
If you are a train buff, this is a must-see museum! You could easily spend all day here. Also, there is a trolley museum across the parking lot as well. Truly a delight to visit
Took my 4½ year old grandson to Steamtown. Thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits. It's part of the National Park Service. Admission is free.
I would have to come back: there is a lot to see. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 some exhibits are closed. At normal times you can also get a ride on a historic train.
Everything is closed it looked more like a ghost town. Escalators weren't working had to get to main floor from the garage.
Steamtown is one of our favorite day trips. Plenty to see, even with about 30-40% closed for covid. Bring your mask and take a leisurely walk. Very cool to see the trains up close (you cannot climb on any due to covid, still)
Amazing locomotives, functional rail yard and they've added a trolley museum which is pretty cool.
Definitely a unique NPS site, but had an absolute blast getting to walk around the trainyard seeing the different passenger cars that were there. The inside is equally as fun and entertaining that shows a fun history of locomotives and train travel in general.
Admittedly, I was not big into trains before coming here, but after my visit it defiinitely has my interest piqued! Not to mention the NPS employees on site were extremely accommodating and friendly. Made the whole experience that much better.
Highly recommend stopping by when in the Electric City!
STEAM AND STEEL. A must stop if you are a train and trolley fan, and if you are not typically, you will be once you stop in.
A Historical Musuem for Steam powered locomotives on one side of the complex, a Historical Museum for Electric Trolleys on the other. So much history for the reasonable price of.well spending your time at this marvel of mechanical motion. Admission is free to this National Park and unfortunately due to Covid restrictions no train tours are operating at this time.
For me this was personal. Many decades ago I spent time wondering amongst the metallic marvels when they belonged to the Steamtown USA exhibit in Bellows Falls VT and riding through the Vermont countryside behind them.
