I came to Roots, as I imagine many of their other clients do, because I had had poor experiences in other PT settings. I'm 29 years old. I developed sciatica associated with a disc herniation when I was 28 that had progressed to becoming very debilitating. I tried multiple rounds of physical therapy as well as steroid injections. My prior PT was at another, larger practice in the state where the providers appeared overworked. I got the sense no one really had a concept of the underlying factors that had contributed to my particular injury, let alone a well-developed care plan that was specific to my situation. I was at the point of considering surgery.

My experience at Roots was totally the opposite of my prior experience. Jackie, my physical therapist, is wonderful. She has specialized training in orthopedic injuries and it shows; She quickly was able to identify underlying musculoskeletal imbalances and has patiently worked with me to improve my proprioception, strength, and mobility where appropriate. We always do a mix of manual therapy that feels more restorative as well as active exercises that feel more rehabilitative. I never feel rushed, and I get the sense she genuinely cares about me as a whole person.

It has to be said the longer appointment times and wonderful staff come with the trade off that it is more expensive/less financially accessible. I have the financial security and ability to navigate my insurance plan in order to submit my claims after each appointment. Roots does make it clear up front that this is how the billing system works. Even if I had to pay fully out of pocket, last week I was able to dance at my wedding, which was truly unimaginable 3 months ago, and I would have paid anything to be able to do that.

My favorite place in Providence to practice non-heated (thank you!) yoga, which I had been look for for a while. It's beautiful space and I've enjoyed every class I've taken there:)

As a personal trainer myself, I couldn’t recommend these folks highly enough. I was seen by Jackie after experiencing some elbow pain, and she was incredibly knowledgeable and explained her thought process in the diagnosis and treatment thoroughly - my pain is gone too! If you’re looking for an inclusive, down to earth, queer-owned practice, look no further.

I would give the practice even more stars if I could! I have been seeing Amy for some pelvic floor issues post partum. Since working on the issues and addressing them, my quality of life has improved so much. Amy is amazing and a very warm kind caring person. I really have felt so encouraged and cared for at each visit.

My husband and I also both got massages from Danielle the massage therapist. She has a great calm presence and helped relax us both.

Overall Roots is an amazing practice and I cannot recommend it enough.

My husband will be seeing the orthopedic PT Jackie so will also report back!

I have been going to Danielle for therapeutic massages and she has worked wonders on improving my mobility specifically in my shoulders and upper back. After suffering a few weeks in pain, I had instant relief after my first massage appointment. It’s a great balance of therapeutic and focused work along with relaxation. I cannot recommend Danielle and Roots enough.

I went to Amy on a recommendation and after a month of working together she was able to help me almost entirely recover from a surgery I had been struggling with for 6 months. Very professional and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. Also as a queer person sometimes medical and health environments can be a bit of a challenge but I felt safe and respected in their space right from the start. I can’t recommend Roots enough.

I have attended Roots yoga for 7 months and I absolutely love it! I have taken classes with Julie Cloutier (Slow Flow, aging well, community yoga) and appreciate her caring and holistic teaching style. She is able to differentiate her instruction to each student and to their particular need in the moment. My body feels more flexible, powerful, and aligned. The staff and teachers are welcoming and helpful. I highly recommend Roots Yoga.

I have searched high and low for a great massage and I finally found it! Danielle is truly exceptional. She listens to your specific needs and customizes each massage to YOU! Every time I go it’s different and what I needed on that day. The music, temp, space is the perfect setting to relax, rest and rejuvenate. It’s a staple now in my monthly self care routine. Highly recommend -10 stars!

I'm so glad I found Roots! Highly recommend. Everyone is incredibly friendly and professional. Rachael was a huge help with some hip discomfort I was having, and both Rachael and Amy were great to work with for pelvic floor physical therapy and push prep to help me prepare for labor and birth. Danielle was the best prenatal massage I have found in Providence (and I tried a few). Looking forward to getting back in for PT and massage now that I'm post partum.

I have had fantastic experiences at Roots over the last few months. Jackie is a great physical therapist: she is kind, thorough and responsive and gives specific suggestions for follow up. I have seen REAL improvement on two different issues, with one now completely resolved. And Danielle is a wonderful massage therapist-great balance of focused work with overall relaxation. I am going back to her as often as I can!

Receiving 3 months of physical therapy to treat vestibular migraine from Rachael G.at Roots helped me gain control of my life and lessen my anxiety when dealing with an episode. I was heard, treated, and given the best care possible by Rachael. I looked forward to my sessions each week. With such beneficial results, I felt confident enough to re-start my yoga practice at Roots. Taking classes with Sylvie, Julie C, and Amy continued my journey to wellness. I felt truly seen in their classes and the results were blissful.
Roots is a very special place where, as soon as you step inside, you are treated as family, as if they’ve known you forever. Their services come with expertise, knowledge, and plenty of HEART.

Roots Physical Therapy was a haven of wellness for me during my pregnancy. As a first time, soon-to-be mama who recently relocated to the area, I did not have any other friends who were pregnant or had children. Anna, who I practiced pre-natal yoga with, and Danielle who I saw for pre-natal massages, became integral members of my pregnancy support system and by extension treasured friends. The quality of care and programming at Roots is unparalleled. Everyone is exceptionally skilled, kind, caring and all around wonderful. I will continue to frequent Roots yoga classes, massages with Danielle and will definitely use their superlative physical therapy services in the future should I need them.

The folks at Roots are building a community centered around healing that is felt as you walk into their practice-they’ve intentionally designed their space, services, and programming. I came in with two seemingly different issues, in need of PT. Dr. Amy Smith (& her team) listen, observe, and educate well—prioritizing the interconnectedness of systems and experience. Through hands-on treatment & a sustainable program of tools/exercises, I’ve experienced resolved pain (& also learned to breathe). Incredibly grateful for the treatment I’ve received here!

I was referred to Amy for pelvic floor PT and could never have predicted the ways that it has changed my life. Amy is an exceptionally attuned and thoughtful practitioner, and I am very grateful for her trauma-informed and inclusive care. She has taught me so much and I cannot recommend her, or this practice, highly enough!

I’ve had great experiences with two of the therapists. They treat the whole person and body vs.a particular injury. My calf is healed and I’m overall stronger with their help!
