Sail Newport reviews
7My second year sailing after taking lessons at Sail Newport. The boats are well kept up, my instructor was excellent (Monica), easy to reserve a J22 on line. Is thrilling to sail around the harbor. Highly recommend joining and taking lessons so you can take the boat out without an instructor
Our family did the “Try Sailing” experience. We were hoping to learn a little about sailing and thought it would be a little hands on. Unfortunately, we just sat for an hour and watched someone else sail. We had to pry information out of our guide and several of the answers were “it’s complicated”. I had hoped for an introduction to sailing which is what the place advertises instead we paid to circle the bay. Great for a two year old. Waste of money for anyone else.
The Try Sailing experience was most efficiently run from booking onward and the time on the water most pleasurable with a wonderful instructor.
Great facility. Rented a J22 for 3 hrs last weekend. The boat was well maintained. The check out process was pretty straightforward - I rigged the boat with the instructor, did a tack and a gybe, and docked under sail. Only took a few minutes. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Overall, highly recommended. Great way to see the harbor.
Newport is a famously beautiful place to sail, and Sail Newport is the best place we found there for renting a boat to sail ourselves. They rent out Rhodes 19 and J/22 craft; we got a Rhodes 19 for three hours. The dock staff are friendly and helpful. I have sailed lots of boats, but never a Rhodes 19, so the dock staff were patient in helping us learn to rig the craft and stow it when we were done.
Sailors are allowed to roam the southern part of the bay, from the Newport Bridge down to Castle Hill, more or less. That amounts to about 5 square miles, with a single longest run of 3 miles. Brenton Cove by the dock is a bit crowded with other people's moorings, but the rest of the bay is wide open with steady winds.
Sail Newport's boats are sturdy and well maintained, their staff are friendly, and their prices are fair. We'll definitely sail with them again if we're ever in the area.
These guys are great. I have sailed with them a few times. This time, I rented a boat and got into trouble and they were kind enough to help me get back to the dock safely. I highly recommend sailing, sailing in Newport, and sailing with these guys in Newport.
