Italian Restaurant Battalion reviews
29 This was my favorite place in San Antonio so far! Nice decor and location. Two floors, outside seating. Bar on first floor.
Staff here was fantastic and what really made my experience.
So I had been avoiding this place as another "fly by night, trendy wannabe downtown tourist eatery" and was I served wrong! Although the glitzy decor is a little overdone don't let that through you. As well, don't get get thrown that they are being overly pretentious when they proudly introduce their house made table water. I swear this stuff made the best glass of iced tea I've ever had. The menue apparently changes from time to time but is very thoughtful and inventive. Our server, Naomi, was well educated on the menue and very easy going with my requests. The set up is meant to be shared family style on a number of the dishes which allows for a great tasting tour and can be very cost effective. For a little over $100 plus a very generous tip we enjoyed 3 adult beverages, 2 teas and a coffee, 2 appetizers and then the real fun began by sharing 1 salad with blistered beets, roasted green beans, 1 truffle pasta dish, 1 TBone steak, 1veal with fantastic eggplant that even the picky eaters loved. We topped everything off with a deseart tasting trio of heavenly Pannacotta, Tiramisu and Candied Citrus Tart. Naomi let us know they are now open for Sunday Brunch too. Bottom line, it can be moderately pricey but so soooo worth it.
Above all else, try their meatballs - they're absolutely delicious. I also enjoyed their mascarpone, carbonara, and their braised chickpeas! Also their cocktails are yummy. Only let down was the chicken parmesan, which was tender but not saucy enough for my taste. I'm definitely coming back:)
Great industrial vibe, excellent service, and delicious food. The chicken parmesan is a huge portion and delicious also the gnocci is a definite win. Lastly the tiramisu was an excellent end to the meal! I would have given 5/5 but unfortunately no military discount.
Great food, great price. Plates would be double that price in any other big city. We sat at the bar and the bartender was amazing to my pregnant wife and crafted her an awesome alcohol free drink, making sure to ask what she likes and dislikes. The octopus is a must try.
Awesome is the perfect word for this place. Great food, great drinks and the music was the best! Will be back!
Great place for date night with the atmosphere being cozy and beautiful, the food was amazing, and the staff was extremely professional and courteous.
This restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside but don’t be fooled. We came here for my 36th birthday and the food was amazing. Meals were among the best we’ve had and prices were reasonable. Wacey took some additional note that it was my birthday and brought us a couple glasses of champagne on the way out. 10 for food quality and 10 for service. Will be back for sure.
I wish it could be 3.5.but one entree was excellent, another so-so. Service was friendly and the chic setting was nice. They don't necessarily cater to children, and it was tough figuring out parking. Overall though, a nice experience to have at least once.
A little disappointed. The food seemed to be overcooked and the distinct flavor of charring crossed into burnt territory. Will give it another try, perhaps the kitchen had an off night.
Battalion is a really beautiful and trendy spot offering Italian-American fare that is both very tasty and fulfilling. For me and my boyfriend's anniversary, we blanked on getting a reservation- so we didn't get an early start to drinking and eating but we still had a fantastic night and maybe enjoyed it a little more than we would have because it was more packed earlier in the night. For dinner we had a delicious smaller plate (we shared) of spinach manicotti. Yum! Then our second plate, Eggplant Parmesan came out.wow. Both of our meals had such delicate cheeses and warm sauces, and for being meatless they filled us up and we felt great!
The most special part of all, thoug, was dessert. While my guy was away using the restroom, I flagged our waitress down and told her to surprise us when he came back with a dessert for our anniversary. About ten minutes later, she brought out a decadent tiramisu cake with chocolate bites on top. Scribbled on top; Happy anniversary!
I really had a great time at Battallion and will surely be returning for the good vibes, fine dining, and sweet service. ️
Food was amazing. If you want a great plate then get the lamb. If you want a full belly then get the chicken parm!
Excellent food. The bread was not as good at another Italian restaurant down the street.but yet still good. Chic, upscale. Fresh tasty pasta. Bar staff was attentive and gave great service. Cozy and will return. Upstairs seating. Reservations Preffered.
Remodeled former firehouse! Nice place to have dinner! Very large portions.and nice atmosphere!
Waiter was attentive and friendly. Food was good but too much to finish! I had the chicken parmigiana $26 but huge portion! 2 people could eat from that serving easily. It did taste a little “burnt” though for my taste! Very nice bar and upstairs dining! They left the “fireman poles” in place but inoperable. All in all a very good Italian restaurant! I will return!
I prefer their dinner over brunch, but great atmosphere every time. Their spinach dumplings are my favorite.
Service was prompt and professional. The atmosphere was lively and exciting. The food was satisfactory but average. Veal tasted rushed and the vegatables burned and dry. Expecting more given its reputation. B+
This is definitely one of the best places to eat in San Antonio! Everything we had was over the chart good. Can't wait to go back!
I've waited 2 months for a resolution and with none in sight, I leave this review to specifically discuss the service, food, prices, and ambiance from August 25,2018.
SERVICE
1. Reservation (s) : By far the WORST service I've ever received in all my 40+ years of fine dining experience. Our party was given problems by multiple staff members who answered the phone refusing to make a birthday reservation for 9 people. So, we made separate reservations to accommodate our party, only to have the restaurant loose all but the original for 6 people!
2. The waiter was rude, short, and not at all helpful. In fact, he failed to mention it was restaurant week and so the items many of our guests ordered were charged full menu price instead of the special restaurant week price for the multi-course dining experience.
3. The owner herself gave me her cell phone number and invited our family back to fix their mistakes and make it right. That was 1 1/2 months ago. She has not returned my texts or calls since then.
FOOD
1. We ordered appetizers, 2nd course, main course, and desserts. They all came out of order and at random times. We had 2 pastas served and then no one else had food for over 10 minutes. The people who were served waited out of respect, so their food was cold.
2. We ordered a melon and prosciutto appetizer and instead of the waiter telling us they were out, they substituted watermelon and bread. Since when does that become acceptable to substitute food without informing a customer? And, my fiance ordered that for his main course but yet it was brought before everything else. And the watermelon dish was bland.
3. The eggplant was over-seasoned with salt and basil.
4. The pasta was WAY TOO hard. I'm from the NYC area and this pasta wasn't even near al dente. It needed at least 2 -3 more minutes in the water. And the pasta itself wasn't seasoned with salt.
5. The dessert came in 3 different portion sizes. One piece of tiramisu was 3 x 6 while others were 2 x 2.
AMBIANCE
NOISY! Could not hear most conversations at our table in the corner.
PRICING
This place charges NYC 5 star Michelin-Rated prices for 2 star at best cuisine and service. Best to go any other Italian Restaurant in town but here.
I loved and had no problem with the service.actually really like the waitress portions were perfect and food was very flavorful
Good atmosphere and location! EXCELLENT service.the menu leaves a lot to be desired as far as.it’s complicated.the carbonara I had was beyond oily where I had a puddle on the bottom of the plate:/ the Italian fare leaves lots to be desired:/ but the service was impeccable
