Striking is the best word to describe the decor of this restaurant. Once you enter, it feels as if you have been transported to a Mexican village and you forget you are in Austin. It is a huge space with tons of seating, but they are a local favorite and most nights the tables are completely taken so do yourself a favor and make sure you secure a reservation. The only downfall is the limited parking, so you may have to stalk the parking lot and the adjacent lot as well.
They serve you salsa and chips like all Mexican restaurants, but I am picky about my chips as I like the thick ones that taste as if they were just made and these were served with the ceviche (very fresh and delicious). I requested more for the table with salsa and our waiter made it happen. We also had the enchiladas suizas and the camarones en crema de chipotle and both were incredibly delicious! I love tres leches and sadly, not every Mexican restaurant can get it right, but Fonda does it perfectly! Except I do not like fruit on my cake.

Beautiful restaurant. Great service. Calamari was small and overpriced. I wasn't a huge fan of the seasoning and it really need some brightness from some lemon or lime. Vegetarian entree were presented well but I found it one note and just soft and mushy in texture. Cochinita was tender and flavorful but a little salty since the rice was well seasoned too. Overall we had a great time and it's a wonderful place to take a date.

Maybe a teeny bit pricey but I well worth it with excellent food, drinks and service. This place doesn’t have decor, it has art like free-hand painted (not stenciled) walls and ceilings, paintings, sculptures, etc. We had the Pollo Rotisado and Enchiladas Suizas (pork). Free parking and great people. Interesting history!

Tacos al carbon were the best tacos I’ve ever had and their house red and green salsas had it be taken home.

This place never fails to amaze me. We celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary there a few nights ago, even taking our 13 and 7 year olds with us. We have introduced them to the deliciousness that is ceviche, enchiladas de pato, and the El Mateo. This gem is well known, yet hidden in the neighborhood.

Elevated Mexican food dining. This place has been here a really long time and they know what they're doing. Unique menu items are always delicious and you can't really go wrong anywhere. The ambiance and decor is very nice and the staff is on point.

I'm sure its been said before but this place redefines interesting cuisine from Mexico. I had the Fish Veracruz tonight and it was wonderful. One more reason I wished I lived in Austin.

Wow what delicious food and superb service. I went with a group of friends and had the appetizer of the lamb chops. So flavorful and tender. I had the elote soup so creamy and full of corn flavor. I had the rellenos with zucchini and corn cheese and tomato sauce so light but spot on. Tge tres leches is a very nice way to end a meal here. My friend even bought me a cookbook so I can try and recreate in Tampa.

There are fewer of these great iconic restaurants left in Austin every year. Fonda San Miguel is one you can't miss if you are visiting Austin. This is not what many of you imagine when you think of Mexican food. This restaurant has quality, sophisticated food from the interior of Mexico. The food here is as good as the best restaurants in Roma, Mexico City. The roasted chicken is my favorite.

We went to the restaurant Saturday evening and had a wonderful meal. The ambiance is amazing, the service was excellent and far exceeded our expectations. We arrived a few minutes early and went to the bar to wait for our table. I asked the bartender about his margaritas, he said do you want me to make him the way I like them? I asked him to explain it, sounded great the Rita’s were wonderful. A little later we received a text message that our table was ready. We ordered a dish called Chille en Nogada. It is a poblano pepper stuffed with seasonal fruits such as Peaches, pears and apples. These fruits are mixed with beef, pork, nuts and spices. The Nogada sauce is made with seasonal Mexican walnuts, almonds, cinnamon and topped with fresh pomegranate seeds- it is served at room temperature and the flavor is delicately sweet.
The last time that we had a meal equal to this we were in San Miguel Allende in the heart of Mexico.this restaurant is truly amazing

I was very much looking forward to this second visit after 4 years. And Fonda San Miguel didn't disappoint. Everything we ordered was immaculately prepared and delivered and we greatly enjoyed it and finished every last bit!

Absolutely delicious and very gluten aware. Fantastic food, drinks, and service. If we were local this would be our spot! Handmade tortillas and all scratch food made to order. This definitely should make one of Austin’s top eateries. So glad we found it.

Absolutely no flavor to any food at all. Extremely bland and unforgettable. The sopa de elotes tasted like canned creamed corn, the mole sauce had a bizzare bitter taste, and the suadero tamale had one piece of beef which was unflavored. No idea how this place is so highly rated. Save yourself time and money, and just get taco bell. At least it has a flavor and doesn't cost you an arm and a leg.

Overpriced food, that is bland. Had the enchiladas mole and were not how I remember from central Mexico. There weren't enough tables on the dining area for my group so they had my group sit in different tables in their waiting area. Staff was slow and short handed.
