Terrible. Ridiculously expensive, and could not figure out what was wrong with my ears. The medication I was prescribed was no different than what my regular family doctor had given me before, so 200+ dollars for the "Best ENT in Houston" was a complete and utter waste. Ironically, this place was in network having Blue Cross Blue Shield. It was cheaper to go to urgent care and have a culture done, to have an actual answer as to what was going on with me. I felt like Dr. Gelfand was incredibly dismissive, and misogynistic at times. It didn't even seem to appear that he or the other staff had read my medical history, of which I have other endocrine issues. Despite my own frustration, I didn't take out my feelings on him, or anybody. For some reason, he felt that I did. Then, for some reason, he told me that he sees a counselor, so that patients like me don't "get to him". Troubling. I understand that being a medical doctor does not bring in the happiest patients, but I would hope that any skilled doctor, ENT or not, would have the medical capacity to understand the sadness that someone with an ongoing mystery ear issue would cause. I feel like in some sense, there was a language barrier. Despite my asking questions that were directed towards "how could something like this happen to me? ", and "what can I do to prevent an infection from happening again? ", Dr. Gelfand threw his hands up in the air and told me that he "didn't know". At that point, I didn't understand why I made the 2 hour drive to Houston, when even "The Best ENT in Houston" couldn't even hypothesize what would cause a recurrent ear infection, in the months before seeing him.

What especially bothered me, is that he was so incredibly condescending, and dismissive. He had suggested doing things that, unfortunately, I had done in the previous months to no real help. When I told him this, how my other doctors tried various methods, he stopped me in the middle of talking and asked, "But were they ENT's though? ". I told him no, they weren't. Yet the smirk on his face rubbed me in such an incredibly wrong way, I couldn't believe that a seasoned doctor was willing to put his colleagues, even those that he had never even met, down.

If I knew that this was how my appointment was going to turn out, then I wouldn't have wasted my time. I would have just gone to another place, perhaps to the best ENT in San Antonio maybe, or Austin. Somebody that hopefully would have had more humility than Dr. Gelfand did. I am surprised, as a person with a higher education themself, that Dr. Gelfand would allow himself to act with such unprofessional and uncouth behavior.

If you're considering going here, don't. Despite there being plaques on the wall claiming, "Best ENT in Houston", the title means little apparently. I guess the standards are very low to achieve such fame.
