IJJ just expanded and installed new mats. Gabe is a great coach and the IJJ community is second to none. If you're thinking about trying BJJ this is the place!

I have been practicing martial arts for 17 years, so I have had my fair share of experiences with various schools. When newcomers ask me for advice on how to choose a school, I always emphasize three key factors: solid technique, representation of women at higher belt levels, and a supportive and welcoming community. IJJ not only meets but exceeds these criteria, and this has been my jiu-jitsu home for the past six years.

Firstly, the foundation of any exceptional BJJ school is its dedication to teaching and honing effective and safe skills. The level of technical expertise at IJJ is outstanding. Head Coach Gabriel is not only one of the best practitioners I have ever trained with, but he is also quite skilled at teaching a variety of approaches to the game of BJJ. Whether you're a novice eager to learn the basics or a seasoned practitioner striving for mastery, Gabe is a sage guide.

Secondly, I always recommend that people seek a school that has women at higher belt levels because that means they have been brought up through the ranks in the same manner as their male counterparts. Women won’t stick around at schools that devalue or disparage them. Inclusion and equal treatment are values that everyone should have on the mats, so the fact that three of IJJ’s five black belts are women is important in a male-dominated sport. Inclusion translates to other aspects of gym life that make training better for everyone, regardless of gender.

Finally, a great community is the heart and soul of any martial arts school. IJJ is a family. There’s a genuine sense of camaraderie and mutual support that transcends many hobbies because it's such an intimate sport. From beginners to advanced practitioners, everyone is genuinely invested in each other's progress, creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

Gabriel and the upper-belt students are committed to making everyone feel welcome and safe. I have seen Gabe go above and beyond to slowly ease nervous students into classes or give students with disabilities extra time and attention so they can also participate. At the same time, Gabe will ask people to leave the gym if they are persistently training in unsafe ways or mistreating others, because the IJJ family comes first. Gabe once informed a student that he was no longer welcome after making a homophobic remark about another student. As a queer woman, this action reassures me that I am training in a safe space that will protect me as family. Gabe's consistent leadership in making the gym a safe and welcoming environment for all is greatly appreciated.

I wholeheartedly recommend IJJ to anyone looking to not only learn the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but also to be a part of a community that values one another, safety, and inclusion.

Come train with us! All are welcome. Triangles Everywhere!

To the outside eye, jiu jitsu can be really intimidating.as a woman trying a male dominated sport i walked into the gym with my tail tucked between my legs.i had no idea what i was doing or if i was going to like it.gabe has created a safe space inside of the IJJ gym walls.the technique he teaches is solid, there are plenty of women (and men!) to train with and learn from, and in the two years i’ve trained there i’ve made lifelong friends.jiu jitsu and ijj has given me more than i ever thought possible- i’ve gained confidence in myself, i’ve got a community of people around me that want to see me succeed.and it’s just a bonus that i know how to choke and break someone’s ankle if i need to.

Came here for trial recently. Not welcoming for new people. Owner seemed nice, did not interact with me during trial. I don't mind that since he seemed to be dealing with something important on his phone during the lesson. I was mostly instructed by a woman, black belt and very tall. The instruction was ok I think, I don't know enough about this game to know. She was nice to my face but in changing room she was making fun of another member with another woman who also had a black belt on. What I heard was very mean spirited and they were laughing about it. Door was open so I was hearing from the couch outside of it. I got my stuff from dressing area and left quickly. Did not want them to see me, I was intimidated.

Came because reviews say it is all "family" and I think that is true. Seems good for the people who have got lessons there for a very long time, but made me feel like the new kid at school hearing the popular kids make fun of other members and laugh about it.

Probably wont be going anywhere else, it took a lot of courage for me to try it and instead felt like an outcast. Maybe this sport is just not for me.

I'm a little hesitant to write this review since I consider IJJ to be a hidden gem in Austin for bjj. I was looking everywhere for a kids friendly gym and right away I knew this would be the place for my kid once we arrived. Gabriel the instructor is extremely friendly and very hands on with his training. The value you get for the money really is unmatched in austin. No contracts and no hidden fees. Love this place and I'm sure you will too!

Whether it’s your first time trying Jiu Jitsu or you’ve been training for years, IJJ is the best place to practice JJ in Austin. In the last ten years of practicing martial arts, the instructor, Gabriel, has been one of the best coaches I’ve had the honor of learning from these past four years. He has mastered the art of teaching a technique in a room full of diverse people in a way that a beginner can understand, yet even those who are more advanced learn something new / refine their skills.

Welcoming environment. Helpful training partners. Exceptional coaching.

Also, at what other gym can you find THREE female black belts who train there regularly. Enough said!

My son has been coming to this school for over two years and my 5 yr old daughter started about 5 months! Absolutely best instructor! Always attentive and caring towards his students! Both my kids have grown both physically and emotionally thanks to his teachings!

I've been training at ijj for over six months now. Great place and environment to be in. People are very welcoming and friendly. Started bringing my nine year old son and he loves it too. Highly recommend if you're looking for a bjj gym.

I would not recommend this place for children. The adult program is probably ok but children need constant supervision and the instructor was on his cell phone throughout class and my daughter hurt her arm badly during the drilling part of class. She didn’t understand when to tap. She was only trying the class for the first time and she is only 6 years old.

The instructor (Gabriel Martins) and the environment at this school is the entire reason I decided to start jiu jitsu and here I am two years later. Gabriel fosters such a supportive and community environment. I felt so welcomed and supported during my first week and now have such an amazing community of friends to learn jiu jitsu with. I love having an instructor that I feel so comfortable to ask questions and get feedback from to help promote my own skills. If you're looking for a school with an emphasis on community and support, this is the school for you.

I took a class at this gym while visiting town. Coach Gabriel was very welcoming and explained the movements clearly. Everyone was kind and supportive of me as a beginner.

Very cliquey, high drama environment here. There is little structure to the classes, most of them are being a shown a move or two and told to roll and figure it out. This school is not beginner friendly. It is a high-ego environment with constant badmouthing of any other bjj schools in the area.

I’ve trained jiu jitsu for over 10 years, and Gabriel is one of the best instructors I’ve met. He breaks down techniques well for beginners and adds details that sharpen the game of upper belts. The gym has a great environment, super welcoming people and lots of upper belts that provide tough and technical rolls. The mat space is big and the facility is always clean. If you’re looking for somewhere to train in Austin, I definitely recommend IJJ.

My journey into the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has had its share of twists and turns. It wasn't until I stepped into IJJ Austin that I truly found my BJJ home.

From my first class, the atmosphere of IJJ Austin was different from other gyms. It struck a perfect balance between intensity and comfort, proving itself to be an outstanding BJJ gym in Austin. The training here is both rigorous and thoughtful, with a strong emphasis on mastering techniques. The mix of Gi and No-Gi classes keeps things fresh and engaging, catering to a variety of BJJ styles.

The heart and soul of IJJ Austin, though, is undoubtedly Professor Gabriel. His approach to instruction has totally transformed my BJJ experience. Gabriel brings a deep understanding of BJJ technique, imparting his knowledge with patience and clarity. After some tough experiences at previous gyms, I was amazed at how comfortable Gabriel made me feel. He fosters a community-focused environment, making everyone feel welcomed, valued, and ready to learn.

Every workout at IJJ Austin leaves me feeling stronger, more skilled, and more confident. It's not just a place to train - it's a community of supportive individuals united by the love of BJJ.

If you're in Austin and looking for a BJJ gym that combines top-notch training with a welcoming community, I wholeheartedly recommend checking out IJJ Austin. Whether you're a seasoned BJJ practitioner or looking to try your first class, IJJ Austin has something for everyone. And with no hidden fees or contracts, getting started couldn't be easier.

In the landscape of Austin's BJJ gyms, IJJ Austin stands out. It's more than a gym - it's a place to grow, learn, and become part of a thriving BJJ community.
