Phoenix Chinese Cafe, San Antonio TX

First timers here & we ordered delivery. We requested our food with some customizations and they honored them all! The food was hot, delicious, well priced and well portioned. Thank you!

This place is amazing. The prices are great, the food is delicious and the staff is very pleasant and attentive. Would definitely recommend.

When we first walked in the man greeted us and allowed us to sit where we wanted.the waitress who took our order was really nice and she was quick with everything! Refills, our food, and all that:) my partner had the duck and some noodles but first off the duck was really juicy and the skin was very crispy.as for me, i had the wonton soup and orange chicken.the wonton soup was hot and good and the orange chicken was crispy too and coated in the sauce.although the only thing that set me off was that there was bunch of flies everywhere: (but im not gonna let that stop me lol

Restaurant smells like cleaning supplies. First time I came my soup was almost glowing yellow!

I gave the place another shot and when I arrived for my pickup the the employee took my payment and told me my food was on the table next to him, and continued to sit on his phone and not hand me my bag.

I didn’t make a big deal and got my bag.
I got to my job to eat and the clarity of the soup was better than last time except globs of jelly kept surfacing.

I could not take it so I called the restaurant for the manager and he was not very accommodating in his tone and professionalism. He said he’d give me a new soup, but I don’t trust a new soup.

I’m going back after work to give them this suspicious soup back so they can figure out what the globs are and how not to serve them to guests.

Horrible experience today for my husband. He went in, ordered and was given nasty looks by the staff because he looked dirty, as he had just got off work. He paid and waited while other people got their orders before him even though he was there way before them. Ok fine. They call his name he goes to get his order and the lady wouldn't let go of the bag. He finally takes it, goes to his car and the lady runs out after him yelling that he took it without paying. My husband was so embarrassed as he showed her his receipt in front of a crowd of people. You all should be ashamed of yourselves! I can't even get ahold of management. To top it off, he wanst even given what he paid for.

It was nice and quiet which I loved…. The waitress was fast and friendly. The food hot and fresh good portions as well

My favorite dish (aside from their duck) is the seafood fried noodle. I just love that their vegetables are crispy fresh and the seafood is cooked to perfection. Also that the dish tastes the same each time. Great chef!

This place legit, needs to go under. I'm sure there a some good people working there, but the food is disgusting. If you are a cook there, quit, and go do something different. Making food is not for you. Everything was dry, tasteless, or bad. Literally ordered $30+ in food. It's all going in the trash. How do you guys or girls let this go out your doors?

I love Phoenix Chinese. Always friendly staff, great food, awesome owners. Taz one of the owners is sweet, always smiling and so so friendliest man I've ever met.

The portions and prices are current to the economy. I see someone complained about less food but higher prices. Every restaurant in SA has higher prices and smaller portions. You want a bigger portion prefer the dinner plate.

We invited 40 people this weekend. I must say the service was top-notch. Food was excellent and all my guests loved it. My personal favorite was the Hunan fish. Food was warm and served promptly. Restaurant was clean and owners took good care of us. I highly recommend Phoenix Cafe to all who love authentic Chinese food.

I love the music and atmosphere. Staff is friendly and very clean. I had the Sesame Chicken and Dad had the Mongolian beef. My Mom had Cashew chicken! So good! The best I ever tasted in San Antonio. I will never eat Chinese food anywhere else! I highly recommend having lunch or dinner here!

I have been going to Phoenix Cafe for over twenty years, and I can say that for the last few years, the restaurant had been severely lacking in food quality, restaurant maintenance, and overall drive. Sure, it still got the job done, and was still one of the few places in the area that served authentic Chinese food alongside its Americanized counterpart, but it sadly wasn't the same as it used to be.

After not going for a while following a not so great dinner there, I returned with my family to give it another shot, and was surprised to discover a Phoenix truly rising from the ashes of its old form. The new management team that had taken over the place have brought back passion for the Phoenix Cafe that had been long gone. No longer was the dining atmosphere "charmed" by the old owners angrily arguing with kitchen staff; it felt vibrant, and joyful. People around us seemed to enjoy their conversation and food without having to look over their shoulder for the next argument.

We ordered favorite dishes from both menus; Salt Toasted Tofu, Black Mushrooms w/Vegetables, and the Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Chicken dinner special (a comfort dish I always fall back on; it is breaded significantly less and nowhere near as overly-sugary than the Americanized counterpart). The food was excellent; it tasted as fantastic as it did discovering the place all those years ago. When the manager checking on us had told us that the same chef was running the kitchen as before, we were completely surprised. The waitstaff, which has always been generally pretty friendly and hardworking there, remained true to form and was extremely attentive to everyone, even with a large birthday party occupying the place during the dinner service. The staff's uniform blouses with the new restaurant logo in a tasteful size proudly on display was also a nice addition to the new Phoenix Cafe.

While the restaurant still retains a lot of its original decor and fading artwork, there are clear stages of change going on throughout the place for the better. New signage and decorations serve to draw the patron into a pleasant, welcoming dining experience. The old, questionably stained carpet that likely last saw a cleaning during the Mayor Nelson Wolff administration has been removed, and a completely new flooring put in place, giving a much needed facelift to the restaurant. While you may notice signs of painting on the ceiling in progress and other renovation projects in the works, it is in the background enough to not truly detract from your dining experience.

All in all, I was glad that we stopped by the new and improving Phoenix Cafe. While I never planned to ever completely write the place off (way too much history, and I've never had a truly awful experience eating here, even when the food or atmosphere wasn't the greatest), I can confidently look forward to going back more often, knowing that our beloved neighborhood Chinese food institution is in good hands. If you had a less than stellar experience there in the last few years, I highly recommend giving the reborn Phoenix a try!

SO delicious! I stopped in here for a pick up order while I got my car serviced at the shop next door. They were so friendly, and the food came out very fast. And it’s so fresh! I will definitely be back.

From placing a to-go order, to the pick up. I was welcomed going in and wished well leaving. Food was hot and ready. The prices were moderate too. The place was clean and had a welcome feeling. I would definitely go back whenever I'm around for a good meal.

I ordered from doordash with bad experience. I ordered the fried chicken wing, they wrote no more wing but they didn't give me anything else or call me or refused it. And I ordered house chow mein they give me a chow with no noodle.

My dinner this evening was Chicken Egg Foo Young and it was scrumptious. Staff was welcoming, restaurant was clean and modern. Macaron Ice Cream a must

Don’t waste your money. We have been going here since they opened. Two nights ago we were shocked. Bigger prices and less than half the food. The excuse is ‘sophisticated’ new to go containers and people complaining of the large portions! Seriously, what a lame lie! New management is looking to make money at our expense!

In the picture it used to be full of chicken in the white container. This time it was 8 small pieces in the black box (not enough for 2). Same with chicken fried rice. 65 bucks wasted
