DO YOU WANT TO MEET YOUR ANCESTORS IN THE SILENT TOMB OF KNOWING? DO YOU WANT TO FINALLY EXPERIENCE SOMETHING REAL IN AN ERA OF BASELESS EGOS AND INELEGANT ART? CAN YOU HANDLE THE TRUE PRESSURE OF PERFECTION? GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF SHAKING DEATHS HAND AND VISIT THIS CHAPEL. I WEPT.

You either get it, the message, and the artwork, or you don't. If you do, this is pretty fantastic. If you don't, maybe just avoid and save your bad vibes for yourself.

Wednesday at 11am, had the room to myself. Was an overcast day so at first the room seemed oppressively dark, until the clouds broke. If art and architecture interests you, highly recommend you combine your visit with a 4 minute walk to the Chapel of St Basil, also designed by Philip Johnson. It’s absolutely stunning.

Beautiful place inside and out. The inside of the building was very peaceful. The weight of the silence was breathtaking. I felt in awe. The lawn was beautiful with a nice place to sit and reflect by the water feature, on a blanket in the yard, or sitting on a near by bench.

My second visit; last time was probably 30 years ago. Quiet and contemplative. Enjoy the moment. Don't expect anything too exciting.

Great place to enjoy pieces by rothko in his late years. Super quite, I guess it is a good place for meditation.

The quiet, suburban setting pulls you into a normal off city street. You then walk into what is something that will change your outlook on Rothko, art and spiritually.

Dreadfully pretentious place with depressing grey Rothko works on every wall. Now I understand why Rothko killed himself!
Lots of meditators pretending they're on their way to nirvana littering the place. Worst of all are the guards who stare at you the whole time with a look as it they would love to rough you up. Not exactly a place exuding peace and love. The grounds are nice to visit but give inside the chapel a miss.

Tw: elitism, art literacy.i'm a massive rothko nerd and i was really blessed by the chapel.the comments about the staff are weird and, respectfully, exude a truly ignorant tone.what do you want the de Menil's to do, trust their priceless, one-in-a-lifetime installation to unwashed, unsupervised tourists? Without adequate security, a 19 yr old zoomer eco-influencer would be throwing tomato soup on the north aspe triptych while their box-dyed partner is supergluing themselves to the cute little circle mats. Further, in response to myopic critiques of the actual paintings: i would wager my genitals you spent more time making a provincial 1 star review than you did appreciating the chapel.it's a spiritually potent space that was meticulously engineered to highlight a singularly colossal moment in art history (and american history, btw). So - if that's not ur thing, yea skip it and go to the japanese garden or beer can house where u belong.

I love Rothko, and didn't know what to expect because I didn't really research the chapel beforehand. I wish I had because my expectations would have been more appropriate. The massive, nearly black canvases are meant more for contemplation than for an art experience. If you're wanting to view an exhibition of Rothko's work, this is not the place to go. If you're looking for a quiet place to reflect, this is for you.

I guess I’m a very sensitive person, but I totally cried. They say it’s not uncommon though. This is definitely a great place to sit in stillness and clear your mind. They have a lot of religious books available to read.

Very interesting art, but difficult to see the details with the bright skylight. Definitely try to go on an overcast day.
