I just wanted to thank Jacob Medina and his company, Secure Data, for overseeing the recovery and return of the two hard drives (a 1TB and a 2 TB) I recently sent in for analysis and recovery. The smaller drive failed about ten years ago but when the larger drive failed about six months ago I decided to look into recovering both drives due to the number of images and videos each contained that had never been backed up.

Dubious with the idea at first, I wanted some assurance that proper efforts would be made for recovery before committing any payment. With Jacob’s assurance that no payment was required until my drives had been properly analyzed and a copy of the recoverable directories could be reviewed by me, I agreed to send my drives in for analysis.

After several days in Secure Data’s lab, I was emailed a copy of my first drive’s directory because the disk platters did not suffer any critical damage. The second drive took about a week longer due to platter damage but the recoverable filenames and the unrecoverable filenames were listed separately. Once I had reviewed both recovery file directories I gave the okay to proceed with the recovery process and approved payment.

It is important to note that only the files names were provided at this time – NOT the actual file data which had not yet actually been recovered. Ultimately, most of my user files (including photo, video and audio files) were recovered and returned on a single 2TB external USB hard drive I purchased from them about three-to-four weeks following Secure Data’s receipt of my drives. Also, each drive was assigned a separate case number, so pricing and payment was based on the size of each drive and the actual damage each drive had incurred.

Cost was definitely an issue but I also understand that data recovery is NOT an inexpensive proposition. The lesson learned here is that regardless of one’s knowledge and experience with computers, frequent backups are important. The most economic prevention of having to suffer the cost of data recovery is the act of frequent backups of all system and user files. With a mindset of thinking it will not happen to you, it comes as a shock when it does happen to you, especially if you then decide you want to recover your files. And, for those who do proceed with recovering those files, thank goodness there are reputable companies out there such as Secure Data and employees such as Jacob Medina.

This is a repair shop in a strip mall. It's a drop site where they mail your data to another state to be recovered. They don't tell you this - making it seem like they have an onsite store in Fort Worth, but they don't.
