Texas Avian and Exotic Hospital is such a blessing To have access to the quality of care and best Avian veterinarians in the country has been a life saver to so many parrots and exotic animals. I highly recommend this hospital to anyone with a parrot or exotic animal, the staff and technicians, and vets all knowledgeable, friendly and give some much comfort in your pets time of need or just their yearly ck up, I highly recommend them!

This team and clinic is Bar none! From the receptionist being kind and helpful from foray call to checkout! Special thanks, Nikki who took extra time to answer all my questions to educate me on what's best! (no pushy sales) DR. Jones caring personality, not making me feel rushed getting to know my parrot and educating me along the way.

I went in as a worried bird mom and came out more knowledgeable confident momma and with a healthy bird.
Thank you all!

The staff was friendly and helpful. The veterinarian was knowledgeable and explained everything (step by step process/procedures and cost). I really like how they gave me options, were understanding, and took great care of my pet.

Love this hospital, but the owners need to know that the new hire at the receptionist desk is very bad at his job. He answered the phone very lazily and I seriously thought he was high throughout the whole call. I had to repeat myself so many times to get him to schedule two appointments which I am really not sure actually got scheduled correctly. He supposedly booked two appointments without even taking my name first and then asked for it right at the end like he almost forgot. One of the appointments was for a surgery and he didn't even ask what type of surgery or ask the doctor if they could do it that day. I will definitely be calling back when the normal receptionists are there and if that man picks up I am hanging up.

I wish I could give 0 star's!

I call to set an appointment and the boy on the phone basically was completely unprofessional and flat out rude!

I took my tortoise in yesterday (Monday) after an incident with my tortoise (dog attack) that happened over the weekend. The process of getting her seen with no appointment was easier than I expected so I was very grateful that she could be seen so soon. Dr. Theiland was truly amazing and educated me on everything I could do to help my baby heal. She's by far, the best vet I could have hoped to see my exotic pet in such a situation. Very grateful for this office as a whole, there were multiple people who helped us through this process as well and I am comfortable with, and even look forward to, being back in for follow up sessions in the near future.

I love this place! People here are very knowledgeable and friendly. The doctors have access to the latest technologies which in turn helped diagnose my guineapigs. Dr. Dowling is the best.

I called about my bearded dragon who was very close to death. I was told to bring her in. I drove 2 hours in my car with mechanical problems to get my baby help. I get there and was there for 2 hours. I was charged almost $300 for them to tell me nothing was wrong and to take her to another vet in a few days. When I got home she got worse. So the next morning I drive an hour to another vet and within 20 minutes they found that she had 15-20 eggs stuck inside her. Now I don't know if I'm going to be able to afford the $1000 surgery to save my lizard because I wasted $300 plus the gas to get there for them to tell me she's perfectly fine. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone! I didn't even receive a break down of what I was paying for. So thank you for absolutely nothing!

This place has gone totally down hill. In one of the responses to another persons bad review the manager writes that their hospital is the only one in the state that can do what they do. Flat out lie. "Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists was founded in 1989 and is currently one of the largest veterinary hospitals in the country. COUNTRY not the state. The ego’s at this hospital and lack of compassion is outrageous. Also, this place marks up their drugs and services so the manager writing in the review that they don’t is laughable. I used to bring my birds here to see Dr. Thielen, but now that she is gone, I would much rather make the drive to a hospital where they won’t just take your money and leave your animal for dead. I don’t know all of the new doctors but new is the key word there. Fresh out of vet school with hardly any actual experience in the overall field of veterinary medicine. And not giving a patient the prescription so that they can order it online is a violation of the AVMA's Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics which states that veterinarians shall honor a client's request for a prescription in lieu of dispensing (Section III-C). It is a violation of Rule 1730-01-. 13 for a veterinarian to refuse to honor a client's request to prescribe, rather than dispense, a drug (AVMA Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics). The client has the option of filling a prescription at any pharmacy.

Loved my experience here! It's worth every dollar to get my lovebird treated here. I had a concern my 4 month old lovebird is sick; its his right side nostril that is wet. Currently, he's on lower dose antibiotics and lab tests sent out to determine what it is.

Since it's an hour drive, they provided a mini ice pack to go in the bag to keep the meds cool. That was so nice and they were prepared. They guided me very well how to medicate my bird so I have confidence to do it at home.

During the wellness exam, they answered all my questions, were very gentle/ friendly with my bird, and were very informative about birds! You can tell they love what they do and are very well educated on birds. I'm definitely coming back for checkups. I know my bird is safe in their hands compared to other vets that just say they treated exotic animals.

Update: I think it's super nice they check in on my lovebirds status a couple days later. He is on antibiotics and trying to get better.

My cockatiel was rushed to ER last night and then was transferred to Texas Avian this morning. Dr Jones went absolutely above and beyond trying to diagnose and treat my sweet bird. We called back and forth with estimates and options. When I arrived at the clinic she was extremely prompt and discussed our options openly. She has a heart for animals and a passion for her job. The staff was very professional and kind. I have several exotic pets and will definitely be using this clinic again.

This place is the best. They took great care of my leopard gecko in his old age. Very supportive and friendly staff. They go above and beyond. Will be taking all my animals here from now on.

The kindest service. On time, with love, dedication, patience, and understanding. Recommend 100%.

It may be useful to know that they're on the second building.

If I could give zero stars I would. Absolutely astonished at how unprofessional this business is. Was told over the phone they would wait for me to get there so my pet could get the care she needed, then proceeded to tell me once I got there they said they were closed (a whole minute pasted their time) and we're going back on their word to wait for me to get there. My pet died in my arms in the lobby of the building because they refused to administer the medication needed to save her life. I am appalled by this facility, and all I got was a one worded apology. The trauma created for me and my family was one that this business should be ashamed of.

This is a very difficult review to make as there has been some very bad experiences for me to report about this hospital. I had taken my chinchilla that I had for more than 13 years to be seen by several doctors there for checkups and teeth trimming. The knowledge of the doctors has not been in question but their ethics and reasons for even being in veterinary medicine is what's the issue. The first time that I took my Ernie there was because my former vet and dentist had moved to another city and was unable to trim my chin's teeth, which had to be periodically trimmed. Well the first time I took him in, which was during the pandemic and a time when I was not having steady income because of that they charged me more than $1,200 for a check up and a trim, a procedure that the previous dental specialty vet had charged around $500 for. The doctor and her assistant were also very snippy and rude to me during and after the visit and did not seem to care much about either myself or my chinchilla Ernie. This doctor had a HUGE ego and was featured on some reality TV Vet show and thought that she was God's gift to the veterinary world. She may have had good veterinary skills but she lacked in so many other areas as to what makes a trusted vet. The next time I went in and Ernie needed another tooth trimming I was charged nearly $800 and was lectured about me not taking good care of Ernie as he had gained some weight. I may have inadvertently fed him too many treats as he was very persuasive and I didn't realize he was getting so overweight. In talking to me after seeing him she was shaming both me and him and called him obese about 20 times! Once was enough as she went totally overboard and was just mean spirited. She was also trying to scare me about his condition saying that his teeth were growing into his brain cavity. When I was prescribed some Meloxicam for some ongoing maintenance joint pain issues she also charged me more than $60.00 for a 15 day supply. When I went to get a refill it was way overpriced so I went to Chewy to order it there and they said that they needed a prescription sent from the vet. When I asked her to send Ernie's prescription to Chewy she refused and said that I'd have to buy it at her clinic for an egregiously inflated price which I couldn't afford. For example for that same 15 day $60 that she was charging me I could have had a 90-day supply of the exact same med from Chewy. Even though she knew that it was a hardship she refused to even budge a little on this amount and I had to find another vet to write the prescription. After not being able to afford this treatment on an ongoing basis I had tried to find another capable exotic vet to trim Ernie's teeth. Unfortunately, the next vet I went to had misled me on their expertise with chinchillas and Ernie had a terrible tragedy while getting his teeth trimmed there and died several days later. I did even take him back to the other exotic vet's practice to try to save him but he was too far gone and passed away withing a few hours of me bringing him in as an emergency. It also turned out that the TV doc had left the practice to go be a professor somewhere else and another lady took her place, who I had heard of and who had great respect within the veterinary community. In fact, if they would have emailed me as a patient and told me that they had this new exotic specialist as their head vet I would have taken Ernie in to see her to get his teeth trimmed without being forced to try another vet that ended up killing my dear companion Ernie. If I was offered compassionate and reasonable care from this clinic to begin with I would have still have Ernie as he was very healthy and could have lived many more years. Ernie wasn't just a pet to me. He was my only family I had living with me and also a designated Emotional; Support Animal. It has been more than 6 month's since he's been gone and I miss him terribly everyday. If I would have been treated better and not had egregious billing practices of TX Avian and Exotic Ernie would still be alive.
