Booked a midsize suv through Expedia. Terrible mistake. It took 30 minutes to get through the line of 3 people, they were super slow and the dude was hitting on the customers (a group of women). The lady that helped me snuck in roadside assistance fees and when I asked why it was more expensive than Expedia, she told me to look through the terms and find the extra fee. I found she added roadside assistance without asking me, normally I decline everything because I already have insurance. She tried to scare me by saying if anything happens, I’m responsible for getting the car back and if anything happens, I would have to pay $2k. She was also asking me for my insurance and deductible amounts. Finally she put us in a tiny Kia Soul when we had reserved a midsize suv. The dude at the garage was able to switch it to a Kia Sportage which was a little bigger but not what I’d consider midsize. What a terrible experience and waste of time. Never again.

I was overcharged on gas. I returned the car with full tank. But I received almost $ 40 charge.

This is my first time renting from Payless via American Airline. It was a pleasant experience despite having to wait a while for a car.

I drove to Avis rental return, the return sign does not show where to park budget/Payless, and I drove to the exit, the attendant was very helpful, he gave me the receipt and backup my car, so i can drove towards the elevators. Super service.

Worst experience ever! The airline changed our flight and I didn’t know I had to tell Payless I was coming later then the 11: 30 time I reserved. The girl at the counter rudely made sure to point it out In their policy then say nobody ever reads it. They charged me double what I was originally quoted through Hotwire. The car was disgusting. It had dents and scratches all over it. The inside was gross with thick dust on the dash. It smelled like cigarettes. The car drove like it needed a tune up. The transmission was not good and it had no power getting on the freeway. Worst experience ever.

When we went to pick up our car, we waited a 1/2 hour for it to be delivered. There was no one there to help or answer questions. Finally a car arrived so we loaded up our stuff only to find out that it was not our car! Also, on the return, same damn thing! Your costomer service sucks. And we actually rented from Payless, so we stood in the Payless line for a while when somebody at the counter said we should go down to the Avis counter.

Absolutely horrible experience. Their policies and their hidden fees I ended up paying double the daily rate for extending the car for 2 days. Do yourself a favor don't rent from these guys

You get what you pay for I suppose Only nine people in front of me but this is about an hour wait Only one agent working I’m kicking myself for not doing Hertz Gold service There is no reason all of this bs they do is not already done when reservation is made I should just be signing, showing my ID and grabbing keys

I don't really recommend rental car companies to anyone, but my experience with Payless was way better than what I had with Fox on my last trip. Payless did nothing wrong, which is all you can ask for: clean car, full tank, reliable.

Fast, easy and significantly lower priced. Brand new Kia Optima with 219 miles on it. We arrived late evening and the rental desk was closed with signs noting to use the Avis desk. They had our complete reservation and was processed quickly. This was my first use of Payless and would definitely use again. I was hesitant after reading many of the reviews but took a chance due to the savings.
I think many of the bad reviews come from first time renters not understanding Rental car policy for all companies to not accept Debit Cards. The was a women at the counter having fight over the very same issue when we picked up our car. I don't think people are aware that all rental companies do not accept Debit cards.

I had a surprisingly painless experience at this Payless. I had read horror stories online so I double checked every paper and asked questions about return time, charges etc. In the end every employee was helpful and courteous, the car was just fine and I paid what I was told at the onset. I'll probably patronize them again.

Our plans were cut short by a day and we returned our rental car a day early. We payed for five days but only needed it four days. We didn’t have any deals or specials, just straight pricing and Payless charged us for the full five days and didn’t credit us for returning the car early. They don’t care about customers, they only care about taking advantage of people and stealing money if given the chance.

If there is an option for rating in negative, i will go ahead and do that. Very careless and not flexible at all. Please do not rent car from payless.

Terrible customer service. We are here in San Jose right after our flight arrived and there are no cars available even though we reserved our car in advance of our trip. What makes it worse is the cavalier attitude of the staff both onsite and at the corporate office about our plight and all they can tell is is raise a complaint. But there is no follow up on what is being done to remedy the situation. I would not recommend using this car rental service.

Had a reservation reserved through Kayak and the associate told me they do not guarantee any rentals via third party websites. DO NOT USE PAYLESS IF YOU ARE SEEKING A CAR!

The benefits of going with a smaller company is that there are less people waiting at the counter, at least in my case. Otherwise the service was decent, similar to others. The car we got was fine.

I arrived at desk after my plane landed and I was told they had no cars available at the moment, and if I wanted to wait it would be a couple hours! There were so many waiting for cars it was ridiculous! I ended up going through enterprise and only paid 20 dollars more and there custrkmr service was great I signed up got a car and was out in 15 min. I absolutely would not recommend this company and would never use them or booked them again just go with Enterprise way easier

Horrible experience! I had a reservation on Expedia, but they charged me a much higher price when I got to the counter-too late at night for me to switch to another rental company. I will presumably get this refunded, but such a hassle! On top of that, the car was in poor condition and their representatives rude and unhelpful. Avoid like the plague!

Do not ever rent from this place, go with more established companies. They lure you in with low price then add all kinds of the fee on top
