New York Sports Clubs reviews
26They lie about their promotions. Make you go back and forth until the final reveal that they’re going to charge you x amount after they’ve chased you for a free trial. Disgusting
NYSC charged for 2 months while shut down. I blocked them on my credit card and then somehow they charged me again (2 months at the same time so charge was a different amount). Manager then looked me in the eyes and told me they were refunding me but refused to have written confirmation. The only redeeming quality of this place is the people at the front desk are extremely nice. Anyone with responsibility is a lying dog-faced pony soldier.
Its an absolute energy booster. If you are looking to release stress out then join the classes. There is great team work and Brian is constantly ensuring the newcomers like me do the postures correctly. Excellent experience.
Friendly staff and good gym for being in the UES for a reasonable price. At times it can be quite packed in the weights area. It might be worth considering moving some of the equipment around as there are certain areas that are rarely used. The third floor in particular. Seems like the space could be used more efficiently.
Maybe if they answered the phone. Or if the manager Marvin Perez actually answered emails I would have something positive to say. I have been trying to cancel my membership. First request I made was on Sept 16. And I am yet to hear from someone.
I can't wait to do this again in 2015. I did it in 2013 and had to miss it last year. =[ Won't happen again. Stay near the back if you want to drink and walk and be silly.
You get what you pay for. NYSC is a mid-tier health club for mid-tier prices. I like that membership allows you to visit all non-Premier clubs and there are plenty in the city. You get fresh towels and this club is very large over 4 floors with the same equipment as most other clubs. No swimming pool. Unlike their 51st street club, the machines have yet to be renewed, likewise the changing rooms. Remember to bring your own lock for the lockers. In my experience, 90% of the machines are working. The treadmills are not callibrated so the pace of each one is a little random, some easier, some harder than the pace you set. The fourth floor weights room can get crowded. TV service is a bit of a lottery on the machines. They constantly play corporate videos highlighting fantastic front desk staff talking about greeting members by name. This only goes to contrast the reality of someone exuding boredom scanning your membership in silence without making eye contact barely glancing away from their smartphone. I only visit this club at weekends so rarely see any staff other than front desk, janitorial or a trainer or two. Overall, I give it a 3 stars as the facilities are desperately in need of a refresh, and there seems to be a general lack of focus on details and quality customer service which isn't a cost issue.
This gym is very old. Machines are always broken. It take them months to fix them. Is very very dirty! It’s a shame that they keep a fitness place in this conditions
Worse gym ever. Everything is broken and dont get fixed. They gym smell bad and is dirty. Never coming back again.
This gym has nice people working in the Coachs are very knowledgeable, I would give to them 4 stars because some give a little less of the time we pay, however this gym is awful. Every ten machines, only 3 work perfectly. I've been training at this gym for almost two years, unfortunately it's the only one near my house, but it's so frustrating the lack of consideration for us by this administration that what they charge should compensate us for wasting time because even with 8 stairs, and getting 4 sometimes 5 unused we have to wait because nothing works properly or is broken. The spinning bikes are all noisy and some are broken - there is 6, but only 2 works properly! The machines may cause accidents because they have been without maintenance for a long time, at least since I'm here. I already complained about to the administration but they don't care about. I do not recommend this gym at all because there is nothing that has a positive point except personal trainers.
I would not recommend this gym to anyone. Truly the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. Was incorrectly charged for 3 months straight and the management team including Marvin, did nothing to rectify it. When requesting to cancel, they ignored me for days on end and then charged me for yet ANOTHER MONTH.
In addition to the terrible customer service, their equipment is out-dated, and 30% of the machines are usually out of order. With so many options for gyms in NYC and the UES, I would recommend looking far away from this poor excuse for a fitness center.
Grossly overcrowded, long wait times for equipment. Ankle straps for cable machines have been missing since I joined despite multiple complaints. Clearly, no one cares.
0 stars. They make it impossible to cancel the membership even though I spoke to a manager months ago and they said it was done. Terrible communication and processes.
Marvin Perez the “Customer Service” Manager is unresponsive and unethical. No one should ever join NYSC. They will never allow you to cancel your membership. You will be forced to cancel your credit card to get out of your membership. STAY AWAY!
One of the worst NYSCs in the city.
I don't use cardio equipment very often so I can't speak on the first and third floors all too much. However, I am serious about free weights and this place just dissapoints.
Pros:
- 3 flat benches and 2 incline
- 8 or so benches for free weights
- barbells are on the newer side and not bent
- deadlift platform
Cons:
- Large amount of equipment is broken
- Majority of equipment is so close to one another it's near impossible to use the equipment
- Not much room to stretch
- Weights are everywhere (both plates and DBs)
- Place overall is filthy. I don't care too much about sweat everywhere (it's a gym after all) but this place needs a deep clean. There's mold, dust, old carpeting, bland walls everywhere
- For what little space is on the 4th floor (where free weights are) the equipment selection and organization could and should be MUCH better.
- The squat racks are the worst. I physically can't use them because the notches are at awkward heights for me. Either it's too high where it's unsafe to unrack or it's too low that i've actually injured myself multiple times.
I do hope this place gets renovated because it could be great, but until then I cannot wait to leave.
As a former professional athlete I can say the location on 91 street in Manhattan is disaster. My sister was charged for 2 accounts Instead of one as they opened two and never bother to close it. Kid care is a joke there as mom who working in the gym always bring sick kid in. The manager NEVER there. No one bother to help and you always get overcharged. Go somewhere else
DO NOT SIGN UP WITH THIS LOCATION. They overcharged me and have not responded to any of my communications.
I signed up for a student membership and was misled by Ryan about how much I'd be charged. When I brought it to his attention, he referred me to Marvin, the general manager. Despite emailing Marvin 3 times, texting Ryan multiple times and even trying to contact Marvin through another location, I haven't received my money back or even an explanation. My job and the fact that I'm only here for a summer prevented me from actually going into the location and talking with either of them. I would be very cautious signing up with this location, as they'll overcharge you and are very unprofessional when it comes to customer service.
I requested a freeze before my trip to Europe, I called 76th street and I explained I will be traveling. Guy told me over the phone that everything is set up for the month of the June. I went on my trip and still noticed charge on my account which I shared with their manager Marvin. Instead of crediting me back he put my account on freeze for July so I can’t even work out this month. I sent a few emails abt solving this issue and there was no response. I cc’d their owner who post multiple emails here with “ we are here to help “. No they are not. He didn’t care as much as his management. Response I got from MARVIN was: Hi Angela,
Yes, I requested a freeze because we cannot back date a freeze and I will not be able to give you a credit if there is no confirmation for a freeze.
1. Person I spoke to abt freeze request for the June obviously never did anything abt it so now he is calling me a liar in a nice way
2. I never requested freeze for July but he did it anyways
3. I can care less abt 50+ dollars it’s about their unprofessionalism and principle
I requested account cancellation because I am not walking into place like this again. Their customer service level is equal to zero.
Most of the machines are broken even though I’ve called them out 2 years ago and there rarely cleaning wipes to clean the machines.
Not very clean - equipments are dusty. The soft cushion flooring makes it hard to get a good balance with heavy weights when you are standing.
For the price they charge, this needs to have a much better/tidy setup. Used to go to Blink and I prefer their environment.
