Van Leeuwen Ice Cream reviews
7It get busy on warm day and the ice cream was ok and not something I will go crazy and come back again.
I am extremely disappointed in my recent experience at Van Leeuwen. I visit the Times Square location fairly often and have had great experiences with the employees. However, I have a severe dairy allergy and always ask the employee to wash the ice cream scooper first - usually, the scoopers are placed back into the same water afterwards, leaving room for cross contamination. Today, I asked an employee, Felicia, to wash the scooper before she scooped my ice cream. In response, she said to me, “I can’t wash the scoop. Do you see how long this line is? ” I have never had an issue with this request, but Felicia simply refused to accommodate my allergy and told me I could only have ice cream if I bought a full pint, as they are factory scooped. She was repeatedly rude to me and was about to walk away when my friend asked for a store manager and told her we’ve never had someone refuse allergy accommodations. Begrudgingly, Felicia went to the back to sanitize the scooper and told me it would take 3 minutes. I didn’t have a problem waiting, though usually it takes the workers 30 seconds to scrub the scooper with soap and water. When she finally came back with the scooper, she slammed my ice cream down on the counter and walked away. While I understand that the store was busy, this behavior is unacceptable. Allergy accommodation is vital, and Van Leeuwen is usually very good at it. I hope they will take this opportunity to reeducate employees on the importance of acknowledging and navigating food allergies.
The worst experience ever.
I told the guy that i’m vegan. He gave me to taste a couple of flavors and said that one of them wasn’t vegan!
